Class Description
LTS
Learn to Sail Optimist		 An introduction to sailing class for kids ages 8-14.  Basic sailing skills are taught, including water safety, sailing terminology, rigging, steering, sail trim, tacking, jibing, reaching, and both upwind and downwind sailing.  Students sail in boats known as Optimist Dinghies.
LTR
Learn to Race Optimist		 Students that complete the beginner Opti course and/or possess ample knowledge and boat handling, including the ability to sail upwind and downwind, may enroll in this advanced Opti course.  Refinements will be made in boat handling and sail trim, as well as embarking on a deeper understanding of the sport, including boat speed, wind-reading, and tactics.  Students will be introduced to racing as a positive and exciting way to enjoy sailing.

Learn to Sail
FJ's and 420's		 An introduction to sailing class for kids ages 13 & up (exceptions will be made for students big enough to handle either an FJ or 420).  Basic sailing skills are taught including water safety, sailing terminology, rigging, steering, sail trim, tacking, jibing, reaching, and both upwind & downwind sailing.  Students sail both Flying Juniors and 420s.

Learn to Race
FJ' s and 420's		 Students that complete the beginner FJ/420 course and/or possess ample knowledge and boat handling, including the ability to sail upwind and downwind, may enroll in the Advanced FJ/420 course.  Refinements will be made in boat handling and sail trim, as well as embarking on a deeper understanding of the sport, including boat speed, wind-reading, and tactics.  Students will be introduced to racing as a positive and exciting way to enjoy sailing. 
MBJA Racing

Opportunities to compete in local and regional regattas will be made available to qualified students in advanced courses. Students who successfully complete the Learn To Race courses may be invited to train and travel with the "Team Macatawa" racing team.  For more information on Team Mac, visit the Team Macatawa website.
